Makena was fixing herself a small plate of salad. She bypassed the smoked brisket, ribs, ribeye, baked potatoes, corn on the cob, rolls, and green beans. If I thought about it, I barely saw her eat anything that wasn’t a salad all week. It wasn’t my business though. I wasn’t going to pry and get my head bitten off. My stomach growled so I decided to fix myself a plate and trail her to an empty table.
She sat down and looked at me sit across from her. “We are not doing this today.”
“Not doing what? Eating? I’m hungry and this is the only empty table and the collective thinks that we should get on neutral ground.”
She squinted at me before saying, “I honestly don’t give a fuck what the collective thinks. It’s already been made apparent to me that if I want anything done or if I want to have a voice anywhere on campus, I should be a man. So, there’s that. There’s the neutral ground. Can you leave now?”
I smirked and shook my head no. “Nah, I’m going to sit here and eat my food. If you want to leave and cause yet another scene please be my guest.”
She rolled her eyes and took a bite of her lettuce. That’s all it was there nothing else on her plate but rabbit food.
“You came to a cookout to eat salad?”
She didn’t bother looking at me. “It’s a picnic and I did.”
“Translation bougie ass cookout. You not hungry?”
“I won’t be in ten minutes when this is gone,” she replied. “Anything else?”
“Nope. Live your life.”
I inhaled sharply before digging into my food. “You need an attitude adjustment, you know that? Your man needs to get on his job.” She sucked her teeth like she was born and raised in the West Indies. “Don’t have a man, do you?”
“What does that have anything to do with anything?”
“A lot.”
