He explored the pit of my body like he was hoping to find gold. It didn’t matter if it was dull. It didn’t matter if it was impure. He wanted his jewel. He needed his jewel, and I was his safe place. It didn’t matter that he was no longer mine. So…I laid there and opened up the innermost parts of myself to him and participated in this boring display of intimacy, pretending like he was changing my life. Until finally…the moment was over. He collapsed onto my body in gratitude and exhaustion, like he had just got done working his heart out. I rolled my eyes and tried my hardest to contain my annoyance.
“J, we’re going to be late,” I reminded.
He groaned. “I just need to sleep after that.”
“I definitely know what you mean.”
He kissed me on the cheek and climbed off of me. “Man, that was good, babe.”
I swung to the edge of the bed wrapped in the comforter. “So, I guess we’re back to pretending we like each other, huh?”
“What do you mean?”
I looked at him, debating if I wanted to open up this can of worms right now. “Nothing. Forget it.”
He quietly looked back at me. A smirk on his face. He moved closer to me, closing the space between us. He slid his arms around my waist and leaned in to kiss me. I kissed him back, because this time, I was searching for gold. Some inkling that could prove to me that sex wasn’t all our relationship had become. Our tongues fought for dominance against one another, but the moment I felt his arm ease between my legs… I let him win. With just one touch, I opened myself up to him like I was an iPhone, because at this point, that was what I was programmed to do. I succumbed to his touch until I thought about it… I asked this man a question. I shifted under his body, pulling away from him. He eased back to his side of the bed, slowly sitting up, still smirking at me. This man knew exactly what he was doing. He grabbed my hand and squeezed it.
“I like you plenty, babe.” His words caused me to shrivel up inside. They were exactly what I was afraid of.
