FINAL SNEAK PEEK-FORBIDDEN ACTS
Hey, reader!
Tomorrow Skylar Nightingale returns with Forbidden Acts, and we have one final sneak peek to share with you before it goes live!
SNEAK PEEK
As I sat on the edge of my bed listening to my best friend tell me about her day, a smile spread across my face. I missed talking to her, but our conversation was interrupted when the line beeped. I looked at my phone display. It was a number from the college. I told Ana I would call her later, then clicked over.
“Hello Ms. Adara?” The woman’s voice sounded panicked.
“Yes.”
“This is Mrs. Reed. I’m the assistant dean at the college, and we’re in a dire situation.” I remembered her along with several others from the interview process. She was a short and stocky woman, with white hair and glasses.
“Okay, how can I help you?” All sorts of thoughts were running through my mind. Were they laying people off already? What was going on?
“Well, our professor that teaches PSYC 101 has quit his job and we need a sub rather quickly. Do you think you would be up for the task?”
“What about my advising job?”
“Well, teachers are still required to work as an advisor a couple of days out of the week, but I would cover the remaining part of the week, until we find someone who can teach. Once that happens you can go back to your advising job full time.”
I hesitated with a long pause.
“You will be compensated for your inconvenience and we would increase your pay as well.”
“Uh-h,” What should I do?A pay increase would be great, but I loved my first day—except for the part where I had the heartbreaking experience with Alex.
“I know this is last minute. We already asked everyone we could think of, and because of your background in teaching and psychology you seem like an excellent choice.” She was right. Psychology was my major, but I also majored in teaching with a focus in psychology. I loved both, so it wouldn’t be a loss.
“Sure. Why not?”
“Oh, thank you. Thank you.”
“You’re welcome. Glad I could help.”
“Yes. And just to let you know this is extremely rare for this college. We pride ourselves in staying on top of what’s going on on campus. This time, I guess we were unaware of the Professor’s intentions.”
I’m a part of a rarity. Great, I thought sarcastically.
“Well, since you’re accepting, I’ll fill you in a little on the position. Your Tuesday and Thursday classes end a half an hour earlier than on Monday, Wednesday and Friday because there’s less time between classes during those days. Other than that, it’s a pretty steady schedule, unless you offer extra help to students when your classes end, which is completely up to you.”
“That sounds great,” I said, noting that I would like to offer assistance at some point during the year before permanently returning to my advising position.
“Okay, I’ll get back to the dean and we’ll work out your paperwork. Oh, and more about the position will be in your packet. Can you stop by my office before your classes begin so we can give you everything you need?” she asked, sounding as if she needed to take a breath by the end of her last sentence.
“Of course.”
“Thanks so much. See you tomorrow.”
“See ya.”
After ending the call, I stood up and thought for a moment. I felt as if I were forgetting something. Then, I placed my hand on my head as realization struck, Alex transferred to PSYC 101.
