SNEAK PEEK
Since he recovered from his near-death experience, he'd been laying as low as possible. Anything he did in Oakland always went through three people before it got back to him. It made his hustle complicated since he didn’t have his ears to the ground like he was used to. But it worked for him and it kept him safe. He'd only been back to Los Angeles to lay his eyes on her every so often and leave. Ricky and his mother kept him up to date on everything. But seeing Taj graduate from college with honors was worth every single risk. Her dreams were worth his life.
He was so proud of her; words couldn’t describe how much his heart burst with happiness. Her tenacity, her resilience, and her ability to overcome the most traumatic experiences of her life made his soul smile. Indie didn't expect anything less from her, she was born to shine and prevail through anything. It was embedded in her DNA. Whether she knew it or not. He did.
Sitting in his seat, he looked down and around to see if he could spot Senior. He couldn't. He knew how much Taj meant to him especially now that she was his only living child. Senior would do whatever he had to do to make sure he protected her. Indie understood that which was why he’d kept his distance from her. Sometimes he wished that he never interrupted her light with his but her light, love, and stillness was something that he needed.
The band started to play the music to march the graduating class in and he pulled himself out of his thoughts and peered down at the graduates intently. It wasn't hard to find Taj. Her curls made it almost impossible for her cap to fit over them. But in true Taj fashion, she always made it work.
He watched as she took her seat and looked as she scanned over the sea of people to find Senior and Ms. Mary. Once she spotted them her somber expression faded into a soft smile. Indie spotted Senior and Mary side by side and smirked softly to himself happily. Taj turned her head back to the front facing the stage. Her cap was decorated with two blue hearts and cursive words between them that read Indigo Dreamin'.
His heart sank, his eyes fluttered and his breathing grew shallow. All he wanted was to run down the stands and tell her she didn't have to be sad anymore, she didn’t have to cry or wonder about the what if’s anymore. He was here and he was ready to love her the way she deserved to be loved. Indie imagined himself tilting her chin upward into the light and placing a kiss to her sweet lips. He wanted to take her pain away, to wrap her in his arms and restore her faith in him and in God. But he couldn't and it killed him.
As the ceremony went on she got her degree and held it tightly in her hands. Before she walked off the stage she stopped briefly to look toward the ceiling and blew two kisses upward towards the sky, one for him and the other for her brother. As she stepped off the stage her head dropped and she wiped a few tears from her face. Indie's eyes swelled up and his lips trembled. He was never one to wipe them, he let one fall.
